With racing competitions in which speed and engine noise went hand in hand with elegance, the 1960s were a legendary period in the history of the motor vehicle market. And it is these sporting values that inspire this special edition Vespa, including the Racing Sixties. Its distinctive points? A scooter that is both retro and sporty!
What is she like ?
The new Vespa special series were inspired by the Vespa SXL 150 BS6 and SXL 125 BS6, which are urban scooters modern, technologically advanced and with a very attractive vintage look. But unlike the latter, the design of the Racing Sixties evokes the return to the golden age of motorsport.
Unveiled earlier this year at the Auto Expo 2020 in Greater Noida, the Vespa Racing Sixties highlights the freedom of expression which is reflected through the different aesthetic choices. The motorcycle’s fairing echoes the exploits of legendary sporting figures, bringing back memories of legendary circuits such as those of the Monaco Grand Prix or Monza. Furthermore, the model is reminiscent of historic championships like the Targa Florio.
Nostalgia is kept to a minimum, however, because the Racing Sixties instead sports a fresh and modern design. Sporting spirit is guaranteed thanks to the combination of simple colors such as the yellow and green duo and red and white. While the first combination displays a classic appearance, the second evokes a more dynamic, more contemporary spirit.
This evocative color palette is highlighted by a metallic finish, gold rims and a saddle in soft and velvety nubuck. Moreover, special mention for this seat which, in addition to being comfortable, is also covered in PVC to protect against bad weather. Likewise, it is made up of topstitched seams reminiscent of those of sports cars from the sixties. And with the dedicated plaque, these two elements pay homage to the field of car and motorcycle racing. Matte black details add an additional touch of style to the handle, the footrests of the passenger, light settings and many other visible parts of the scooter.
Obviously, the Racing Sixties includes all the standard accessories of the Vespa range. You will therefore see an LED headlamp, a USB charger under the saddle, a starting lamp. Very interesting characteristics, certainly. But a little novelty would not be refused, like a digital dashboard for example.
What’s at the heart of the Vespa Racing Sixties?
Under its attractive bodywork, the Racing Sixties is the same as the standard Vespa SXL 125/150. In other words, if you like the technical characteristics of its predecessors, you will be happy to discover this model. And just like the editions of the Vespa range, the Racing Sixties exists in 2 main categories: the Sprint of 50 and 125 cc, and the GTS Super in displacements of 150 cc and 300 cc.
The 120 cc category develops 9.93 hp at 7,300 rpm and 9.6 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. The Racing Sixties 150 cc engine, on the other hand, generates 10.4 hp at 7,600 rpm and 10.6 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. Furthermore, Vespa’s principle is to keep a recipe that works by using the chassis of the BS4 model. Which allows it to easily swallow turns. MRF tires also provide good grip and real balance when driving.
Should you buy this model?
If you are nostalgic for the design of motorcycles of yesteryear, you like contrast, and especially if you are one of the many fans of the standard Vespa models, then go for it. The Racing Sixties accompanies you both in the city and on your weekend getaways. Furthermore, it is also yours if you enjoy collecting special editions.
This model has been on the market since July 2020, at a variable price depending on the engine capacity. The Sprint versions are available from 3,499 euros, the two Vespa GTS Super are respectively marketed at 5,349 euros for the 150 cc model and 5,699 euros for the 300 cc version.
