If your vehicle is more than 30 years old, it is of course not obligatory to opt for a collection registration document. This depends entirely on the owner who will have to undertake some administrative procedures.
If you are curious to know more and discover the advantages and disadvantages that a collection registration card offers you, the rest of this article is likely to interest you!
What are the main advantages of a collection registration card?
One of the advantages that the collection mention on your registration card offers you concerns the famous (and contentious) technical control.
Indeed, if your vehicle has a GVWR equal to or less than 3.5 tonnes (which is the case for almost the entire vehicle fleet), the interval between two technical inspections will be 5 years and not 2 years as for ordinary vehicles. In addition, if your vehicle was put into circulation before 1960 you will be completely exempt! You are free to pass it for safety or conscience reasons but you have no legal obligation to do so.
Collector car insurance
Classic car insurance is an integral part of the main advantages offered by the collection gray card. Considered in principle as secondary vehicles for occasional use, the conditions and prices offered by insurers are very advantageous and perfectly suited to old cars and their owners.
In this context, you can obviously choose third-party, all-risk or tailor-made coverage according to your needs. Indeed, if you plan to move your old car to various public gatherings, it could be wise to opt for coverage adapted to this use.
There are of course other advantages such as being able to keep the original equipment of the vehicle even if the latter no longer meets all the constraints of current standards, being able to keep the original plates (embossed lettering on a black background), yellow headlights etc.
Are there any disadvantages of the collection registration card?
Concerning the disadvantages of obtaining a collection registration document for an old car, there are now very few of them. A few years ago, this type of vehicle was subject to a geographical circulation limitation but this is no longer the case. The only real disadvantage is that it is prohibited to operate a vehicle with a registration card for professional purposes.
Collection registration card: how to obtain it?
Is your vehicle more than 30 years old? You are therefore, in theory, eligible to obtain a collection registration card or at least, eligible to obtain the collection mention on your registration document if your vehicle is already registered in your name.
It is good to know that the original characteristics of your vehicle must not have been modified and that it must no longer be produced.
The process of obtaining your collection registration document can no longer be done at a prefecture. You will absolutely have to complete your procedure online, with the official service France Services / Public services house.
Once you have completed your procedure, you will automatically be given 3 elements:
- Your file number
- A document confirming the registration of your request
- A provisional registration certificate (CPI) which will allow you to travel in France for 1 month, the period necessary to receive your new registration document. Of course, remember to print it to justify your situation during a road check, for example.
