For the year 2020, the Tracer 700 from Yamaha is getting a makeover. No more overly sporty looks! The manufacturer has opted for a more refined design. A change of look that reflects its performance. With its 73.5 horsepower and 196 kg on the scale, this model is not a beast of power, but promises the driver thrills as long as he dares to push the engine to its limits.

In previous versions, Yamaha opted for an excessively aggressive look. No doubt because of the many it received for its aesthetic choices, Yamaha has softened the features of the Tracer 700. The designers got rid of elements that seem superfluous to give it a resolutely modern look. Its design will blend perfectly with the urban landscape, but will be able to impress more than one person during your escapades in the countryside.
The front side has been worked with care. The designers combined lenticular lighting with LED strips. Everything gives character to this trail and gives character to the machine when its headlights are on. Although the designers seem to have opted for a minimalist design, we appreciate the addition of fairing sides which refine its silhouette while highlighting the brand thanks to the logo present on each of the side faces.
The design stands out quite well and lucky buyers will be delighted to have this motorcycle in their garage. Of course, it remains possible to make some aesthetic modifications by equipping yourself with different accessories. This new version of the Tracer 700 is the first 689 cc motorcycle from Yamaha to comply with the Euro 5 standard. To do this, engineers have made some modifications to its CP2 engine to limit C02 emissions. In particular, they reviewed the operation of certain components. Additionally, a new catalytic converter has been placed behind the exhaust pipes for better fuel combustion.
Result ? The power and torque remain practically the same as those of the previous model with its 73.5 horsepower and 68 N.m. In fact, Yamaha has accomplished a real feat by managing to comply with the Euro 5 standard without significantly reducing the power of this model. The manufacturer also emphasizes that the modifications made have no impact on fuel consumption.
In broad terms, this new version has practically the same qualities that were attributed to its predecessors. Its engine responds well and will allow you to travel long distances comfortably. You will feel every acceleration although in the end its performance does not match that of a sports car or a super bike.
Maneuverability: 3.5/5
Connoisseurs will confirm that this new Tracer has some similarities to the old Yamaha TDM900, a sports motorcycle supermoto type. The two models offer practically the same driving position and against all odds that is a good thing. Indeed, the TDM was one of Yamaha’s most comfortable motorcycles. We see the manufacturer’s efforts to make driving as pleasant as possible.
You will have to focus your attention on something other than the engine to realize the efforts invested by the manufacturer. This new version of the tracer includes a saddle much better padded. The designers opted for rubber to make this component. A material chosen for more grip and to allow you to maneuver this motorcycle more easily.
Although there is nothing to report for driving on the road, be aware that the suspension may be temporarily absent on bumpy roads. The fork and shock absorbers do not effectively absorb shocks and your lower back will not be spared. Fortunately, this does not necessarily harm the handling. Over time, you will be able to get used to it and even discover all the qualities of this trail.

With the selling price of this model, Yamaha had to make some significant moves. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has shortened the list of equipment and proprietary systems available. You only have one driving mode, no anti-roll system, electronic suspension control or even assisted driving when cornering. This model therefore lacks all the features found on the trails in the range above.
That said, the manufacturer has done everything possible to ensure that the dashboard meets all your requirements. Presented in the form of an LCD screen with inverted display, this component makes it easy to read the information. The control buttons have also been conveniently placed. It is thus possible to scroll through the options using a single button. In addition, a few locations have been provided for you to install 12 V sockets or USB ports.
The Yamaha Tracer 700 is compatible with many accessories offered by the manufacturer. We will particularly mention the Akropovič exhaust system which could possibly improve the performance of this model. Of course, travelers will appreciate carrying small side bags to be able to carry their personal belongings. Finally, if you want to have a makeover, many kits are also available.
Verdict: a model that will certainly please fans of the series
The Tracer 700 should have been the motorcycle that marked this generation. Much more than a model dedicated to people who have recently passed their Motorcycle licence It displays excellent value for money, a mischievous attitude and also a versatility that cannot be denied. If you squint hard enough, it has the qualities of a top-of-the-range sports car, but without the pretension of any off-road capability. For the 2020 redesign, Yamaha gave the Tracer 700 a new look, tweaked a few small details, brought emissions up to Euro 5 and transformed what was already an excellent motorcycle into a particularly versatile machine.
Certainly, the 2020 Tracer 700 perhaps does not have the dark side and bad boy image of the MT-07, its elder. However, it remains an excellent alternative for young drivers looking for a reliable mount for all occasions. Despite everything, it could be interesting to modify the suspension after purchase in order to enjoy more driving comfort.
